First, for those who aren’t incredibly excited about this special holiday, we hope to get you in the spirit of the day by sharing the history of Valentine’s Day.

While there are variations of the story, one storyline goes like this:

Personalized Name ArtIn the third century in Rome, Emperor Claudius II reigned. He decreed that young men were no longer able to marry as they would be more successful soldiers if they were single. A priest, Valentine, continued to marry young couples despite the law. When the Emperor discovered Valentine’s actions, he was sentenced to death. While in prison awaiting his execution, he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter. Just before he was to die (on February 14th), he sent a letter to his love and signed it, “From my Valentine.” If you jump ahead a few years, Pope Gelasius I declared the day of Valentine’s execution to be a day of honoring the ones we love.

There are several other Valentines in Catholic history and two of them lived around the time of the famous Valentine of February 14th, but we thought this story, however true, was the perfect way for our readers to jump into the holiday fun.

So Why Celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Even if you don’t have a significant other, there are plenty of people to show your appreciation to. Whether it’s a mother, daughter, sibling, or someone who has gone out of their way to help you at work, you can show them that you have noticed and care by giving them a gift, even if it’s a simple single flower.

What to Celebrate the Big Day With?

Traditional Valentine’s Day gifts may be partly why so many of us dread finding something special. A card picked out from the aisles of the grocery store, a box of chocolate that could be for anyone, or a bouquet of flowers that will wilt within a week or two, even though the thought is there and it’s nonetheless significant, there are plenty of people out there who want a Valentine’s Day gift that truly shows how special that someone is.
